Perioperative Services
The Upstate Nursing Professional Practice Model establishes the shared values within the department of nursing of professionalism, collaboration, education, resources, holistic care and goal to provide patient and family centered care to achieve optimum outcomes.
Patient and family centered care is our care delivery model in which patients receive individualized care to meet their needs with the patient and family as the key priority of all we do.

Pre-Admission Testing Center
Located in the Diagnostic Center on our Community Campus, this department streamlines a patient's admission process prior to elective surgery. Here the patient is interviewed by a registered nurse who reviews their health history, medications, and completes all necessary paperwork, as well as beginning to develop an individualized nursing plan of care. The center will facilitate EKGs, chest x-ray, lab testing, and other diagnostic tests when ordered by the physician, along with pre-operative teaching.
Surgery Center
This 18 room pre-surgical unit admits and prepares surgical patients and their families for surgical procedures that require anesthesia, including same day surgery, (outpatient) one day surgery, and inpatient admission surgery.
Outpatient one-day surgery patients are recovered in the PACU and discharged home from the Surgery Center. We also offer a 4 bed outpatient infusion service (OPIS) in which some chemotherapies and blood products are transfused, and a mini surgery suite that supports outpatient minor surgical procedures.

A 16-bed unit that is specialized in the recovery of patients undergoing general or regional anesthesia for both surgical and non-surgical procedures. The PACU staff work in a critical care environment in collaboration with the Surgical and Anesthesia faculty and residents, caring for patients through the critical recovery period after anesthesia. The PACU focuses on carefully monitoring the patient’s airway and breathing in the immediate postoperative period. The PACU also focuses on initiating postoperative pain management during this timeframe.
